FHE NEWS

Letter from
Peter Levine, Ph.D. and Bruce Gottlieb

Dear Colleagues,

We hope that you are well and enjoying the summer (unless you are receiving this in the southern hemisphere, in which case we hope you are enjoying your winter!).

We are writing this letter together to share that Jane Hansberry is leaving her position as FHE Executive Director at the end of this summer. We commend Jane for her leadership and many accomplishments on behalf of the organization and wish her well with her future pursuits, which include teaching at the University of Colorado, School of Public Affairs. Jane is assisting with the transitions of her duties to other FHE staff members. Meanwhile, a task force representing FHE faculty, staff and board members has been created to continue to review and implement the kind of organizational structures needed to best support our SE ® training. Please know that business will proceed as usual as we look forward to the second half of 2008...Read More here >>

Start Where you Are:
an Update from the Petaluma, CA COTS Center SE ® clinic

From Deborah Boyer, Lee Wylie and Patricia Meadows

We are pleased to say that since piloting the SE Clinic at COTS Center for Homeless Children and their Families last summer, the clinic has now expanded to two afternoons a week. This was possible through support from the center's dedicated staff and committed core of SE volunteers. While the current number of volunteers seems to be meeting the needs of this population, we continue to welcome those who may feel "called" to work with the homeless and ask them to consider volunteering with us as our program continues to grow and evolve. We are all very pleased with the enthusiastic response the clinic has received and cannot wait to see how the program matures.

Another avenue we are using to develop the project is a nearby site in Petaluma. As we expand the SE Clinic to this second center, there will be many new volunteer opportunities available. This clinic will be located in COTS’ second and larger shelter, ... Read More >>

Congo Project
SE in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

We are happy to share that the FHE with Hoskinson Consulting has agreed to provide education in Somatic Experiencing® (SE) and outreach to the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. With the generous support and invitation of a well-established NGO there, we will offer the trauma healing principles of SE as a central component of the long term peace and reconciliation movement repairing war torn DRC.

For much of the last decade the DRC was caught in catastrophic turmoil that claimed the lives of at least 5.4 million people making it the largest military conflict since WWII. Consequences from the war have included widespread traumatization due to conflict, dislocation, and systematic sexual violence against ... Read More >>

UPDATE
SE Journey of Margarita Salas-Morrel

The first time I heard of SE training was in April 2000 when Isabel Correa helped bring the training to San Antonio, Texas. The information presented was impressive and exciting. Unfortunately, the timing to attend this wonderful training was not right for me. I had just become the mother of a beautiful little boy. My husband and I decided we needed to take care of our little one first. I also prayed and asked that, when the timing was right for my family and me, I would have the chance to go to that amazing training to help promote healing in our communities. That opportunity presented itself to me in 2005 when the SE training came to Austin, Texas thanks to Maggie Kline (our SE faculty), Joanne O’Neille (SEP), and Isabel Correa (SEP). That is how my SE journey began. All the skills that I have learned at all three levels of training have been critical to strengthen the effectiveness of the ...
